The Pace of Wonder

The pace of wonder…this was the topic of my devotional this morning. Well, I guess God is satisfied that I have heard His message about showing appreciation and since I shared it with all of you, you can hold me accountable. On to, or maybe back to, pace of life. The pace of wonder.

Have you been on a walk with a two-year old lately or maybe a little white dog named Howard? (He is my dog in case you haven’t met him.) Both the child and the dog can teach me a little about the pace of wonder. What is that stick doing there on the sidewalk? Look, a bird in the tree. Why is that leaf yellow? Look, a dog in the window. Let’s walk over there. Let’s stop now. Let’s run now. Let’s sit down now. Let’s walk the other way. Look, blinking lights. Look, a bunny. You get the picture. Child. My dog. They are similar in pace. A walk with a two-year old is a slow meander with questions every few steps. A walk with Howard is more like a slow adventure involving frequent stops at each tree, bush, post, and other such neighborhood décor rather than exercise.

Every night on my way home, I think…I’m going to drive around the block and look at the lights tonight, but my mind moves on even quicker to what I need to rush home to do. Really? How long could it possibly take to drive around the block? The pace of wonder…it is my new challenge.

Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming, “We have seen amazing things today!” Luke 5:26 NLT
