Christmas time is my favorite time of the year. When the weather cooperates and isn’t 80 degrees outside, it even feels like Christmas and that makes me happier! Traditions are a part of my DNA, so Christmas gives me many opportunities to continue traditions and add new traditions. Last year, my cousin sent me an article about how family traditions provide stability and a sense of security to children that can continue for generations. The article of course made me cry but her words of thanks for including her family in our yearly traditions made me cry even more, happy tears of course.
Time, however, is not my friend during the month of December. There are SO many things I want to do and sometimes, our traditions have to be scaled down or even replaced by a less time-consuming event. The time spent together is the most important part and when I try to schedule too much, it defeats the purpose of spending quality time with family and friends because the stress that accompanies the event takes away the joy. Life is a balancing act, and I often dream of going back 20 years and aligning my priorities to match my current knowledge of what is most important in life. It isn’t possible to turn back the clock, but I can use my past regrets to guide my future choices. Enjoy this holiday season. Focus on family time, traditions new and old, and think about 20 years down the road. Merry Christmas!
